"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world."
- Nelson Mandela
"Education is not the filling of the pail, but, the lighting of a fire." - William Butler Yeats
"Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace." - Confucius
Language Arts- English

This year in language arts we will be focusing on what a sentence is, as well as the parts of speech. Students will then be encouraged to use these skills within their own writing.

Math

This year in math we will be using the series entitled My Math. This new series provides students with the opportunity to use technology as a resource to practice math skills. There are also many hands on activities as well as the opportunity to work in small groups.

Religion

This year in religion we will be focusing on the Ten Commandments. Each chapter follows a three steps catechetical process: We Gather, We Believe, and We Respond. Students will be gathering in prayer, reading about the truths of the Catholic faith and then responding to the message of the lesson.

Reading and Spelling

This year in reading students will be introduced to a variety of different literary genres. Each reading selection will focus on a specific reading comprehension strategy as well as  vocabulary and phonics skills (spelling strategies). Students will receive a silent reading guide (SRG) with each reading selection. This worksheet will contain the vocabulary for the reading as well as comprehension questions. This an excellent resource to use when studying for the weekly reading quizzes. Reading quizzes will take place every Friday and spelling tests will be every Thursday unless otherwise noted in the weekly newsletter.

Social Studies

This year in social studies students will learn about the five regions of the United States. After each unit students will complete an in school project. These projects include a float, salt dough map, powerpoint presentation and poster.

Science

4th Grade science will be full of exploration and investigations.  We start the year with learning about how to use the tools needed for science so we dive deeper into actually using the metric system units with the correct measuring tools. In addition, we will dissect a squid.  Then we will look at "Predator/Prey" relationships with an outside activity.  Next we will explore "Light and Sound."  Then we will get more physical science as we work with static and current electricity.  We will then connect electricity to magnetism.  We wrap up our physical science with Force and Motion and Rube Goldberg contraptions.  Finally, we end the year with a deeper look into "Space" and "Weather."  After all this science,  I hope the students will be more like Albert Einstein, and "Don't Stop Questioning."
